Today, the Muslim Ummah has lost one of its great luminaries—an eminent scholar and preacher, Professor Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem—a truly remarkable personality who embodied both knowledge and noble character, eloquence and deep faith, love for the Prophet ﷺ and devoted service to his noble Sunnah.

Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem was a true lover of the Prophet; his heart, speech, and poetry overflowed with that love. He never tired of invoking blessings upon him, and every occasion became for him a platform to speak about the Prophet’s pure life and lofty character. In every conference or gathering, whenever he spoke about the Prophet ﷺ, tears would precede his words, and hearts would melt with his expressions—as though his tongue flowed not with rehearsed speech, but with the sincerity of love itself.

He was also a unique spontaneous poet, able to compose verses on the spot without preparation. His poetry would flow effortlessly, rich with meaning and emotion, as if inspired by divine eloquence. Just as he was a born poet, he was also an orator of rare power, captivating minds with his eloquence and stirring hearts with his passion. Whether in universities, mosques, or international forums, he would fill the place with light and awaken in souls zeal and devotion to faith.

Yet eloquence alone was not the secret of his greatness; he combined it with vast, firmly rooted knowledge. He was among the foremost scholars of Hadith—renowned for his memorization, understanding, and mastery of chains of narration. He dedicated his life to teaching and explaining the Sunnah, believing that serving Hadith was a lifelong duty. For decades, he taught at Al-Azhar University, nurturing generations of scholars and researchers.

Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem was a man of action as well as knowledge. He did not stop at words; he lived what he taught—combining the classroom with the public sphere, the pen with the pulpit, knowledge with practice. He was an ideal teacher, training his students in manners before scholarship, sincerity before credentials. All testified to his deep humility, patience with his students, and tireless efforts to benefit people without discrimination.

In his stance toward rulers and the issues of the Ummah, he was a model of wisdom and honesty—advising without hostility, guiding without flattery. He believed that speaking the truth should be done with the balance of knowledge and mercy, not with anger or recklessness. For that reason, he retained his dignity and respect in the eyes of all—honored by kings and presidents, and revered by scholars and preachers alike.

He was, may Allah have mercy on him, a strong voice for Ahl al-Sunnah in Egypt, defending their creed, upholding their authentic methodology, and refuting falsehood with evidence and reason. In an age when extremist and deviant voices multiplied, he stood as a balanced standard—unifying, not dividing; guiding, not misleading.

Despite his advanced age, he remained active in praising the Prophet ﷺ and serving the call of Islam until his final days. He never tired of giving lectures and attending conferences, never declined invitations to scholarly or da‘wah events—as though his soul found rest only in remembering Allah and His Messenger.

Indeed, Dr. Ahmed Omar Hashem was a crown upon the heads of scholars, a radiant face in the sky of Al-Azhar and the Muslim world. He combined authenticity with renewal, knowledge with humility, piety with action. He never sought fame or position; he lived for Allah and died in the love of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

May Allah have vast mercy upon him, reward him greatly for his service to Islam and Muslims, make his knowledge and legacy a guiding light for future generations, and grant his grave the coolness and blessing of Paradise, as he once nourished hearts with his wisdom and eloquence.
